Spike Shields are a common shield type in Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Elemental spike shields are manufactured by Maliwan, while explosive spike shields are manufactured by Torgue.
Special Effect
When taking melee damage, Spike Shield returns elemental damage to the attackers.
Usage & Description
Spike shields deal elemental damage whenever the user is struck with a melee attack.
Spike shields are useful against enemies that primarily make melee attacks, and is of little value against ranged attackers. One of the more notable benefits of this shield type can be seen when being swarmed by weaker enemies (such as larval varkids, or rakk). These creatures' low health leaves them vulnerable to the spike effect, so they are quick to die when they strike a spike shield.
Note that when a player is being attacked by multiple enemies with melee at the same time, only one enemy will take damage from the shield.
Variants
Borderlands 2
- Captain Blade's Manly Man Shield - Unique cursed explosive shield that adds explosive damage to melee attacks even when it's down at the cost of taking increased damage from elemental sources.
- Impaler - Legendary corrosive shield that launches homing corrosive spikes towards enemies when damaged with bullets and behaves like a regular spike shield when damaged by melee attacks.

- The Spike Shield is obtained randomly from any suitable loot source.
- Spike becomes a shield payload in Borderlands 3.
