Vex is the playable Siren class in Borderlands 4.
Background
Vex has a cynical and sarcastic exterior that disguises her inner empathy.[3]
Vex was an abandoned or orphaned child who was forced to grow up alone, living as a "street rat" on Cretia, a planet located at the "ass-end" of the Six Galaxies. She always wished she could be anyone else.[4]
As a teenager, Vex got a job working in retail at Mass Market Appeal, this was a traumatic experience which shaped her world view and steeled her nerves, leaving her unafraid of anything else in the galaxy.[4]
One day during a hectic shift at her retail job, a sudden Mercenary Day sale was triggered without warning (which caused her manager to kill himself). As many shoppers came flooding in and after one loudly demanded a refund in order to get a better deal, Vex was overcome with emotions and suddenly found herself gifted the powers of a Siren, becoming one of the six Sirens in the galaxy. The resulting bloodbath from activating those powers killed every single person in the store except for Vex herself; she quickly scrawled a 'Permanently Closed' sign on the store front and left, choosing to travel the Universe and become a Vault Hunter. [5]
With her new powers, Vex left Cretia as soon as she could and later symbolically "killed" the old her by choosing a new name. The choice was not an easy one, and the registration robot she was thinking out loud in front of said she was "showing signs of vexation." Vex almost registered as Blessica, the most popular name in the Six Galaxies, and then she realized the robot just gave her the perfect name.[6]
On her sixteenth birthday, Vex got a Digirunner in an event which involved lots of gunfire.[7]
At some point Vex took a job for a "pencil pushing Atlas scrub" who wanted to hire her to sneak into his rival's office and hide his keyboard and put salt in his coffee. Vex describes this as one of the worst jobs she ever took, as the client tried to pay her with a 30-day free trial of his ECHOcast. Vex broke both of the client's hands, and in hindsight decided she should have taken his tongue instead.[8]
After she became a Siren, Vex attracted the attention of a Siren superfan named Lyra, who saw Vex as her hero. Lyra lured Vex into a meet-up by sending a message to Vex purportedly from Amara, which had said Amara wished to teach Vex the basics of being a Siren. Lyra initially tried to pretend she was part of the Siren sisterhood and was Amara's personal assistant, and upon angering Vex admitted she didn't know Amara and had solely wanted to meet Vex. The encounter did not end well for Lyra, as she asked if Vex's tattoos glowed when she became angry and Vex told her she was about to find out.[9]
After experiencing her rough and lonesome childhood, Vex feels a compulsion to help others who are struggling with feelings of loneliness and despair because it "just feels right or something." The awakening of Vex's Siren powers meant she would never have to be alone ever again, as Trouble and her Phase ghosts will always be there for her. Vex's Phase ghosts even seem to have a degree of sentience, as Vex once used one to terrify a man into paying her the money she was owed, and Vex had a conversation with the Specter about what the entity had done while away on the shakedown operation.[4] [10] [11]

Trivia
- While working at her old retail job, Vex looked remarkably similar to another Vault Hunter, Gaige
- It was hinted in a conversation with a patron at her job that Vex is a fan of the in-game Deathening series, agreeing that the 2nd one was much better than the 3rd. This could be a meta reference to how many fans of the Borderlands series view the third entry when compared to what is seen as being the best entry released thus far.
- Her familiar, Trouble, is named after one of the developers' pet cats.[12]
- Vex is not her given name. She chose it as an adult to help separate her old life from her new life.
